Penang Food

English tea @ E&O Hotel

Ultra Crispy Peanut Pancake

Our Penang hawker feast!

The most delicious Char Kway teow found here.

Casual Poet

Hunted this place down at New Bridge Road, which is like, so near my office. It was a haven of peace and quiet, with nice-looking raw furniture, and very single item obviously chosen and created with much love. Some of the really cool stuff they have are wooden pencils engraved with the words "Sylvia Plath", "James Joyce", etc.

And then, there's this surprising roof terrace. It looks like a place where people can gather with no pretensions and just have a roaring good time or a chat into the early mornings.

Tea at Cova

Recently, I have been in love with the idea of English tea, as in complete with finger cucumber sandwiches and scones.

For the ultimate tai-tai experience, check out Cova at Paragon. Anything less than chi chi not accepted.

$5.80 Maggi Mee

This is what I had for dinner on Sunday night. Instant noodles with luncheon meat and a fried egg. And it cost $5.80.

And it's all because the Hong Kong movie I watched on Saturday night showed these people eating them.

The power of suggestion! That's why I work in advertising.

Le Dolce La Villa

I luuurrrve the idea of converting old spaces for new uses, right? So how can I not check out La Villa, a fine italian restaurant housed in the former River Valley Primary School along (you guessed it) River Valley Road. Looking at the place from along the road, we thought we were underdressed and the menu would be overpriced. But surprise! the food and service was non pretentious (ok, maybe the mascarpone ice-cream was a little poseur), and it was all very affordable. New hangout!

Kopitiam

Here's another kopitiam in Balestier that seems untouched by time. Tiny in size, but huge is old school flavour. Looking forward to my next visit.

Friday Night Live

Checked out a spruced up Portsdown Road. First stop was Klee, with its overpriced cocktails (what?!!? they don't serve beers?!?!) and wonderfully talented pianist/singer. The outdoor setting was a little to raw to warrant such prices, I thought.

Then we wanted to go to Colbar for a bite, but alas, their kitchen was closed by the time we got there. This is the one place in Portsdown with real flavour still.

So, dejected, we went to the corner coffeeshop in Holland Village. While stuffing my face with prata, my eyes spotted this at the corner of the table.

For a closer look.
Shit! Is someone trying to tell me something?

Dinner on Sat

Had dinner at a friend's place and this is what her husband made. Seriously, with the recession looming, this is the best kind of night out. It was almost like eating at a restaurant.

Baked Alaska

Just discovered this new dessert. It's called a Baked Alaska. Basically, it's ice cream covered with cream that's poured over with heated alcohol. Hot and icy, who could ask for more?

Balestier Bak Kut Teh

My favourite Bak Kut Teh place in Balestier. Out the millions of Bak Kut Teh on Balestier Road, this is gives me the most authentic food in the most authentic atmosphere. And I should know cos I live there.

Even though the portions are stingy and the place has been rated "C" for cleanliness (come to think of it, does that mean it's extra clean, since it's an uppercase C), it only adds to the original teochew heritage of Bak Kut Teh.

And drink the tea that most people skip nowadays, it helps clear the tongue of oil.

Old Hong Kong

New restaurant at my beloved Novena Square2. Quality food at not too sky high prices.

Relish this

Cluny Court – The next most happening F&B enclave in Singapore.

Ok, maybe that was an exaggeration. With just a handful of eateries, it could be simply a gourmet's relief camp in Singapore. Let's see what we have. There's Da Paolo Gastonomia, Brille (not sure if I got the name right), Awfully Chocolate and of course, there's Relish.

In all honesty, my burger was undercooked and the professionalism of the server wasn't exactly top-notch. But service recovery was excellent – I got a free salad!

Worth visiting, definitely.

Made in Singapore

Khong Guan started selling biscuits this way in early Singapore. I'm so glad to see it surviving. For my weekly fix, I buy at least 4 packets from this shop in Whampoa. So many favourites, can't make up my mind each time. I even introduced them to my Japanese neighbour and she has fallen in love with the "ear" biscuits.

Food for thought

Stopped by this place for a cappucino and spent the better part of an hour day dreaming. After that I found myself better able to appreciate the music playing on the radio, the sights and sounds of everyday life. I think it's the slowness that helped, and also being free from the Internet and phone calls, all the things that makes life move too fast.

paisley & cream

I think this place is seriously underrated. Great food at great prices with a nice atmosphere and plenty of magazines to browse. Plus the pretty cupcakes to look at. I could come here everyday.

Canele

See what my neighbour got me for a treat. Yummy!

PS Cafe at Palais

Had a meeting with a client at the new PS cafe at Palais Renaissance. It's so lovely.... The place smells great with all the fresh flowers and the ambience is perfect for an afternoon of lazing or musing. Will be back again, real soon

Riders Cafe

Woke up early on Sunday morning to go to Green Fairways Golf Course and Driving Range with my husband to practise his golf. Then we went to Rider's Cafe for breakfast.

Read about this place some time ago and have been dying to go there. And glad I am that I finally made it. (Having to wake up early on a weekend is a huge deterrent) I was actually hesitating between here and Mimolette.

The food was wonderful. (Their pancakes are perfect!) Service was causal, friendly and sincere. And best of all, its all priced reasonably. We paid less than S$30 for breakfast. The food we had was no different from any 5-star hotel.

Luu...rve this place!

The White Rabbit

Been bugging my husband about checking out The White Rabbit. After much postponement, we made it there for lunch yesterday. It was such a disappointing experience. Menu was limited and predictable. Service was feeble and condescending. Food was so-so and a tad overpriced. Decor and ambience didn't live up to expectations. I wanted to go to Jones the Grocer after 5 minutes in the place. My husband had four words: first and last time

PS Cafe and Jones the Grocer, we love you more
